This certificate is designed as a first qualification in the civil construction industry. It is awarded to people who, working under supervision, have demonstrated competence in the basic skills and practices associated with the civil construction industry in their chosen strand. Holders of this qualification have a knowledge of basic construction materials, processes, and records, and of safety procedures on civil construction and roadworks sites. They will be able to operate small plant and equipment safely, read and interpret plans, and assist with setting out and compaction.

This qualification is a prerequisite for the National Certificate in Civil Construction Works (Foreperson) with an optional strand in Kerb and Channel and the National Certificate in Civil Plant Operation (Skilled). The Award in Road Opening course covers 50% of this course over a 3 day block course.

National Certificate – Civil Works and Services (Road Opening - Trenching)

This qualification recognises that the holder has knowledge and skills for working safely and co-operatively at road opening operations for service trenches.  This involves opening the surface and excavating and then, once service operations have been completed, backfilling and compacting.

The optional strands represent knowledge and skills for safely and competently carrying out required work in trenches for the following services: electricity supply, gas distribution, and water services.

This qualification shares some unit standards with, and may provide a pathway to, the National Certificate in Civil Works and Services (Road Opening - Site Co-ordination). The Award in Road Opening course covers 45% of this course over a 3 day block course.

National Certificate – Civil Works and Services (Road Opening - Site Co-ordination)

This qualification shares some unit standards with the compulsory section of the National Certificate in Civil Works and Services (Road Opening - Trenching) with optional strands in Electricity Supply, Gas Distribution, and Water Services. The Award in Road Opening course covers 12% of this course over a 3 day block course.
