Land Based Training - Construction provides two different types of training programs - the fixed training session in the classroom to cover a complete training program e.g. a National Certificate and specific short courses for the Employer who hasn't got the resources or time to develop a training program for their employees. On this page you will see several examples of each - so you can understand what we can do for you and your team to improve the knowledge and skills of your work force.

Tertiary Education Commission [TEC] Training Courses

On January 13th 2003 LBT Construction started it second TEC Introduction to Contracting course with 15 keen students from Wanganui and Palmerston North who were tutored by Kevin Whiteman with Dick Vroombout the Field Officer. This course was so popular that a separate course was commissioned by TEC mid year in Wanganui to cater for the demand.

The team were taught the Unit Standards in the Civil Construction Works (Intro Skills) as well as numeracy / literacy, CV writing, interrelationship skills, tractor and chainsaw safety and operation. Students have to undergo an intensive 2 week Induction to Contracting block course concentrating on health and safety, traffic management and how to act around plant and heavy equipment, before being sent into the workforce.

After the block course the students spend 32 hours “on-job” a week being trained by an employer and 8 hours "off job" gaining formal training . Land Based Training - Construction works with local employers around the Central District who enjoy having the extra worker and being able to introduce new people into the industry, with many of the students going on to full time employment with their sponsor Employer Company.

J B Wares model - National Certificate in Civil Construction Works (Introductory Skills)

During 2001, Land Based Training developed and introduced a training program for the National Certificate in Civil Construction Works (Intro Skills) structured around the J. B. Ware’s normal day to day working operations. The training program with assessment was designed to:

utilise the resources within the company as much as practicable,

formally train the staff in the equipment that they use on a regular basis, and

demonstrate that the staff are trained for the work they are involved in

Nick Evans (Capital Excavations Ltd) took advantage of the training program and signed himself and his foreman into a training agreement with the NZCITO to received training on a training sharing basis, joining the formal training sessions while still being assessed at his own worksite

The major benefit seen by the trainees was once they completed the training program and were assessed as competent (as per the Unit Standard);

they improved their understanding of the basics in civil engineering and construction,

they received training in an environment that was conducive to learning with little stress,

they gained a recognisable qualification,

they enhanced their employment prospects, and

several are contemplating furthering their qualifications with employer support

At the conclusion of the years training the teams from J. B. Ware and Sons Ltd and Capital Excavations Ltd were trained in a multitude of different disciplines within the civil construction trades. The stakeholders – the Companies, NZCITO, Contractors Federation and Land Based Training were able to learn from this new model of providing training.

This method of providing training has been adopted by other companies who saw the benefits of introducing formal training programs into their own organisations / companies

McBreen Jenkins - Whangarei - Surveying

A successful 2-day Level 1 Survey course was held in Dargaville in September 2002 for 9 staff from Dargaville and Whangarei.

The Dargaville Regional Manager, Rob Wilson, was keen that the guys achieved more than a sit in the classroom where everything goes in one ear and out the other. He required the units covered on the course to be assessed and logged with NZQA and that the subjects covered also had a significant practical side so that the skills learnt could be applied to the job straight away.

With this brief in mind the course was designed incorporating the Unit Standards; 6476 Read and Interpret Civil Construction Plans and 6480 Assist with Survey and Set out on Civil Construction Works, with the first day covering theoretical aspects and the second day allowed time for assessment and practical application of things learnt on they learnt in the classroom.

Comments from the course evaluation sheets completed by the trainees stated that all felt that the course was worthwhile, especially the putting into practice the theory taught. Rob Wilson believed it achieved exactly what he wanted and everyone thought that the content and presentation was at the right level.

This is another example where the client was able to be specific as to their training requirements and LBT Construction delivered a total package at reasonable cost and effort for everyone involved

Taylors Contracting Ltd - Nelson - Forestry Earthworks
The training provided by Jeremy Palmer to Taylors Contracting Ltd from Nelson was a great example of working together. Jeremy designed a training program to specifically suit the needs of Donny Webster (training manager) and the team from Taylors to incorporate local materials and conditions so that the guys could complete their National Certificate in Civil Plant Operation - Forestry Earthworks. The company required the training to incorporate unit 12570 – Demonstrate knowledge of Materials used in Roading and 5627 – set up and work safely at roadworks sites this was coupled with Transits TTM for Level 1 Roads. Several of the team went on to gain STMS qualifications coupled with Unit Standard 5628 during 2003.

Stagecoach New Zealand - Wellington - Health & Safety / TTM
The training provided by Jeremy Palmer for Stagecoach New Zealand from Wellington was a joint effort between NZCITO, Stagecoach and Land Based Training. Stagecoach identified a need to have their team trained in Temporary traffic Management and other areas of health and safety. Jeremy designed a course taken over several days that met Stagecoaches specific needs - temporary traffic management, height work, elevated work platforms, health and safety in the workplace and use of company documentation. This course format has evolved into the InfraTrain Limited Credit Program on Temporary Traffic Management .

Laings Hire and Tegel Foods - Telescopic Handlers Course
Land Based Training was approached by Laings Hire Service in Christchurch to provide training to their clients (Tegel Foods - Auckland) on their new JCB Telescopic Handlers.  Kevin Whiteman wrote the training program to include:
Plant Safety
Plant Operator Responsibility
Characteristics of the JCB - specifically models 53070, 54070 & 53595
 Methods of steering, ancillary equipment,
Types of buckets and teeth and methods of loading
Factors effecting output and operator aids
OSH Requirements - Hazard management, documentation, ROP's
Kevin demonstration of a telescopic handler
Laings Hire were very impressed with the course as it helped them reduce their risk as a Hire company, improve the operators knowledge on operator safety and maintenance and this of course should ensure the hired equipment remains productive. The students were very pleased to understand all the little tricks that Kevin explained and while he was there also assessed some of the team for their Wheels endorsement.
