D endorsements for carrying dangerous goodsIf you're transporting dangerous goods, you usually need to have a dangerous goods (D) endorsement on your driver licence. A lot depends on what you're transporting, how much of it and under what circumstances.

If you're transporting dangerous goods as tools-of-trade and the
quantities are under the limits in Schedule 1 of
Land Transport Rule: Dangerous Goods 2005, you don't need a D endorsement.
| If you're transporting dangerous goods as tools-of-trade in quantities
that are over the limits in Schedule 1, you will need a D endorsement.
Alternatively, you could have an Approved Handler Test Certificate, issued
under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, which shows you
have completed a course on the transport of dangerous goods.
| If you're transporting dangerous goods for domestic or recreational
purposes, you don't need a D endorsement. | |
Note: You must have the correct class of driver licence. If you transport dangerous goods in a heavy vehicle, see Heavy vehicles: Class 2, 3, 4 and 5 driver licences.
Prerequisite - ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE A LICENCE TO ATTEND THIS COURSE
The
one day Theory course covers the requirements of the Land Transport Rule:
Dangerous Goods 2005, including the new rules and changes that bring the
training in line with the requirements brought about with international
standards for the carriage of dangerous goods.
The course under unit standard 17618 covers:

Explain the scope of the Land Transport Rule: Dangerous Goods 2005 (the Rule) and penalties for breaches of the Rule; | |
|
Explain the responsibilities of persons who transport dangerous goods; | |
|
Identify the nine classes and divisions of dangerous goods; | |
|
Explain the provisions of the Rule relating to Dangerous Goods in Limited Quantities, Consumer Commodities, and Small Packages; | |
|
Explain in plain language common terms used in relation to the transport of dangerous goods; | |
|
Explain the requirements for documentation for Dangerous Goods | |
|
Explain the requirements for transport of dangerous goods not carried for hire or direct reward; | |
|
Explain and apply the requirements regarding the segregation of dangerous goods; | |
|
Explain and apply the requirements regarding placards and the placarding of vehicles and freight containers carrying dangerous goods; | |
|
Explain procedures for transporting dangerous goods; and | |
|
Explain the application of
emergency procedures by the driver in the event of an emergency during the
transport of dangerous goods. |
At the successful completion of the course you will be provided with a course certificate as evidence that you've successfully completed an approved course teaching specialist knowledge and skills relating to the transport of dangerous goods.
Please note that you can't carry dangerous goods just because you've got the course certificate. The endorsement must be on your driver licence.

When you have successfully completed the 1 day DG course you will be issued with a certificate that you use at your nearest office of the Automobile Association, Vehicle Testing New Zealand, Vehicle Inspection New Zealand and On Road New Zealand to get your D endorsement on your licence.
You need to bring:
a completed DL 19 application form
| your current driver licence (this is your identification)
| proof of your name and address, such as a bill or an account statement
| a certificate showing you have successfully completed an appropriate and
approved course from LBT
| a cheque, cash or EFT-POS card to pay the $37.20 application fee. | |
Please note that the D endorsement will be valid for five years from the date the course certificate was issued. (The expiry date of your endorsement will be on the back of your driver licence.) To renew the endorsement you'll have to complete another course (to stay up to date with any developments or changes) and apply again.
Eyesight screening check
You must pass the eyesight screening check or present an eyesight certificate. Eyesight certificates must be from either a registered medical practitioner or a registered optometrist, and must not be more than 60 days old.
