Agriculture Training in Leadership and Management
The Otiwhiti Station Land Based Agricultural Training School is committed to train young people in a national certificate in agriculture leadership and management who will then become the new breed of farm managers that the sheep and beef industry needs.
A historic and iconic large scale sheep and cattle breeding property located in the Hunterville district, Rangitikei.
Programme/Pathway:
PC3477 - LBT Certificate in Agriculture – Level 3 (120 Credits)By studying the LBT Certificate in Agriculture students will be able to complete the National Certificate in Agriculture – Level 2 as well as the LBT Certificate in Agriculture Level 3. The first year programme is delivered on farm, accommodation is provided for students. The programme is designed for those new to agriculture, or who have limited experience and it gives an opportunity to build on skills and knowledge needed to participate in the hill country sheep and beef industry. Course content will include vehicles, machinery, handling livestock, fencing, Health & Safety, agrichemicals and pests and diseases. PC3478 - LBT Certificate in Agriculture Level 3 (Year 2) (123 Credits)This programme follows on from the LBT Certificate in Agriculture Level 3 (PC3477) programme and is designed to complete relevant industry National Certificate - Agriculture Level 3 (Cattle Breeding, Animal Feeding and Pastures, Animal Health and Husbandry, Stockperson – Sheep and Cattle), along with options for Dairy Farming – Health and Husbandry and Milking. It is for those people wanting to further develop their career in Agriculture from a basic understanding at level 2, or have equivalent experience working on farms, and would like to advance towards middle management. Initially, their next step would be positions such as herd managers or a step up from junior shepherds. The programme provides theoretical, technical and practical knowledge and requires students to use their initiative and to understand and apply the knowledge and concepts to real farming situations. It is primarily for people who wish to be working unsupervised in the agricultural industry. By the end of the programme people should be able to make minor management decisions on a daily basis and plan for daily and immediate future activities. National Certificate in Agriculture Level 4 (Year 3)

This programme is designed to develop the career of those people who have completed Level 3 training in agriculture or have equivalent experience working on farms, and would like to advance towards farm management. Initially, their next step would be positions such as herd and stock managers. The programme provides theoretical, technical and practical knowledge and requires students to use their initiative and to understand and apply the knowledge and concepts to real farming situations. It is primarily for people who will be working largely unsupervised in the agricultural industry. By the end of the programme they should be able to plan ahead to anticipate and plan for actions required for the next year as well as plan day-to-day activities that include all aspects of farm management.

Other Course Information
Theory
There will be one day per week at the Otiwhiti Station Land Based Training Agricultural School from 8.00am to 3.00pm. David Atmore will tutor these classes.
Practical
Each student will get agriculture training and be taught practical skills in the national certificate in agriculture and practice these by working on Otiwhiti Station and other local stations with a farmer/farm manager. The students will learn agriculture leadership and managment skills from the farmers, field officer, tutor, or any specialist person involved during the course. We put emphasis on a ‘hands on’ approach, that is, students learn best by practically applying theoretical skills learnt.
