W, T and R endorsements for special-type vehicles

If you drive a special-type vehicle that isn't a forklift on the road, you must have an R, T or W endorsement on your driver licence.

The R endorsement is for vehicles that run on rollers.
The T endorsement is for vehicles that run on self-laying tracks.
The W endorsement is for wheeled vehicles that aren't forklifts, passenger vehicles, tractors, fire engines, trade vehicles or vehicle recovery service vehicles.

Definition of a 'road'?

The definition of a road, for the application of transport laws, is very broad. It includes not only streets and highways, but any place the public has access to, including bridges, culverts, beaches, riverbeds, reserve lands, wharfs and road shoulders.

If you drive a special-type vehicle in any of these areas, the rules relating to registration, licensing and general driver behaviour all apply.

What you need to get an W, T or R endorsement

If you wish to obtain an R, T or W endorsement, you must hold a full Class 1 licence (other than a motorcycle licence).
Sit and complete Land Based Trainings approved course that covers the specialist knowledge and skills relating to the safe operation of the item of plant - The courses cover basic plant safety, maintenance and operating procedures using the InfraTrain Operator Safety Manual which is issued in advance to the student attending the course (after payment - see below). The equipment that we use is yours at your workplace.
Students will be required to answer a series of theory questions pertinent to the item of plant the licence is required for and then demonstrate some basic driving skills. The licence endorsement course does not train people to be operators but only drivers (road rules and basic handling skills). LBT has more intensive plant Operator courses available for those individuals with driver licence endorsements.

One licence endorsement  e.g. Wheels or Tracks or Rollers  = $150.00 (Plus GST)

Two licence endorsements e.g. Wheels + Tracks or Rollers  = $250.00 (Plus GST)

All 3 licence endorsements e.g. Wheels + Tracks + Rollers   = $300.00 (Plus GST)

NOTE:

We must have a minimum of 8 licences to be issued e.g. W, T & R for 3 people or W & T for 4 people before we can run a course.

What to do on completion of endorsement training and assessment

Once you have been assessed as being competent you can apply for an W, T or R endorsement on your licence at the Automobile Association, Vehicle Testing New Zealand, Vehicle Inspection New Zealand or On Road New Zealand.

You need to bring:

a completed DL 19 application form (you can get this from the above organisations)
your current driver licence
proof of your name and address, such as a recent bill or an account statement
a certificate showing you have successfully completed an appropriate and approved course (from LBT)
a cheque, cash or EFT-POS card to pay the application fee of $37.20.

An R, T or W endorsement expires on the same date as your driver licence.
